Soybean Oil, Soy Germ Oil and DOD of Soybean Oil – Good source of Nutraceuticals

Abstract

Deodorised Distillate (DOD) of Soybean oil is the best source of tocopherols – Vitamin ‘E’, fatty acids and nutraceuticals. They play an important role with various medicinal properties like anti-oxidant, cholesterol reducing agent, etc. Results showed Soybean oil is pale yellow coloured having 1-2 Acid value, 132-136 Iodine value, 195-200 Saponification value, 11-16 % Saturated Fatty acid (SFA), 21-26 % Monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA), 60-65 % Polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), 0.3-0.5 % Mixed Tocopherols, 0.3-0.6 % Phytosterols and 0.2-0.4 % Squalene. Soy germ oil is extracted and analysed first time in India, having yellow colour, 190-192 Acid value, 120-125 Iodine value, 205-210 Saponification value, 7-10 % SFA, 75-95 % MUFA, 6-11 % PUFA, 0.4 % Mixed Tocopherols, 0.5 % Phytosterols, 0.2-0.4 % Squalene and 0.2-0.4 % other Nutraceuticals. Deodorised Distillate (DOD) of Soybean oil is reddish brown coloured with 100-115 Acid value, 112-120 Iodine value, 155-175 Saponification value, 15-20 % SFA, 24-30 % MUFA, 55-60 % PUFA, 5-8 % Mixed Tocopherols, 5-8 % Phytosterols and 1-2 % Squalene. High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) results of DOD showed 0.47 % α-tocopherol, 0.10 % β-tocopherol, 4.04 % γ-tocopherol, 1.95 % δ-tocopherol and 6.56 % total tocopherols. Quantity of mixed tocopherols was high in DOD as compared to oils, so they are good commercial source of natural vitamin ‘E’ – Mixed tocopherols.
